CNN: 'Can Greece's Digital Future Save the Country's Finances?'

CNN is hosting a special commentary on Greece’s ‘digital future’ trying to give the answer to the question “Can the digital revolution rescue Greece from economic crisis?” The writer, Andrew Keen, is a British-American entrepreneur and professional skeptic. He is the author of The Cult of the Amateur, and Digital Vertigo. This is the latest in a series of commentaries for CNN looking at how internet trends are influencing social culture.
The writer visited Athens, not to enjoy its historical monuments, but to take an inside look at the country’s digital enterprise prospects.
And like every respected article referring to Greece’s economy, this one does not omit the drachma scenario: “In Greece today, the future is mostly characterized by fear rather than opportunity. The problem is that this small country doesn’t appear to be part of anyone’s ‘future.’ Increasingly peripheral, even to the euro crisis, Greece is in danger of drifting back into its dark 20th century past: back to the self-destructive politics of anti-capitalist violence and ethnic hatred; back perhaps to the drachma, to economic autocracy and perhaps even to a financial apocalypse equivalent to the Great Depression.”
Despite the ominous data with regards to Greece, Andrew Keen finds a “rebirth” taking place, “It’s a digital renaissance and it’s being pioneered by a new generation of talented young Internet entrepreneurs who are trying to reinvent not only the Greek economy and society, but also Greece’s role in today’s global economy,” adding that the irony is that this would not perhaps been the case had the crisis not emerged. “In the Greek digital economy, even the smallest business has to be multinational,” he explains.
“Having spent the last few days in the invigorating company of many Greek start-up entrepreneurs, I have been struck with their vitality, intelligence and ambition,” admits the writer, who is convinced that Greece’s “human wealth” can guarantee its “digital rebirth”.
The article could not, however, ignore Greece’s major prohibitive factor when it comes to staring a business: the endless red tape. Many Greek entrepreneurs told the CNN writer that they could easily end up in jail if their business went bankrupt.
