Greek Justice Minister Speaks Out Against Police Violence

Antonis Roupakiotis

Greece’s new justice minister Antonis Roupakiotis called on prosecutors to probe police violence and said lack of action had fostered an atmosphere of impunity, in an interview published Saturday, Eleftherotypia commented.
Numerous cases of police brutality against protesters and journalists have been reported in the last two years when anti-austerity demonstrators took to the street as the debt-stricken country plunged into financial crisis.
“Justice officials must investigate incidents of police violence rapidly and effectively without the long and dubious procedural delays that reinforce a sense of impunity,” Roupakiotis told the Eleftherotypia newspaper.
