AHEPA Announced the Formation of their Achilleas Youth chapter in Melbourne

AHEPA have announced their new initiative–the formation of their Achilleas Youth wing (Australasian Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) in Melbourne.

The group consists of young Greeks who have shown very deep interest in the ideals of AHEPA and its main objectives of promoting Hellenism and philanthropy across the world.

This important initiative has come to fruition through the great effort of the foundation President Jiannis Tsaousis. Mr Tsaousis will be assisted by very capable young men and women – Josh Carfi, Vice President, Elena Halkas, Secretary, Nick Neilsen, Treasurer, John Papaemmanouil, Anthony Papadimitriou and others who show great dedication to their Hellenic heritage and enthusiastic professionalism in their work, according to Neos Kosmos.

Achilleas Youth has already established a Facebook page Achilleas Youth AHEPA and hopes that many more young people from the tertiary level will join the group.

Answering the question why they decided to create an AHEPA chapter in Melbourne, the youth team replied, “With unprecedented unemployment and poverty, consecutive quarters of recession, political instability and continued exploitation of innocent, hardworking Greeks to stave off further structural fiscal deficits, we are offered the challenge and the opportunity to contribute to Greek relief efforts. Widespread global media campaigns have been generated supporting Greek tourism and helping to restore the international reputation of riot-worn Greece. Worldwide movements have begun to stand in solidarity with Greece, raising funds through online crowd-funding and local community events to fund efforts to feed the newly impoverished and starving, to house the homeless and to restore faith to a society on its bare knees.”

“The context of the formation of a Melbourne AHEPA youth wing arises from the crisis. However, our purpose is mutually aligned with that of AHEPA’s in general: to further education, philanthropy, civic responsibility in Australia and values of Ancient Greece by ‘enjoying doing good deeds and socialising with friends of common bond’.”

“We welcome the Achilleas Youth to AHEPA and hope that they will initiate a much needed generational change in our organisation,” says Elias Doufas, National President AHEPA Australasia.

“All large organisations are in the boat of having been led by the first generation members of our community who have now aged, and there is a big need for the following generation of Greek youth to take the reins and continue the important work of promoting and propagating our Hellenic heritage.

“AHEPA wecomes the change and looks forward to a long and stable future as the largest Hellenic Organisation in the world,” Mr Doufas said.
