After Delays, Appeals and Antiquities Found, Works on Bulgarian Highway Connecting Sofia with Greece Continue

On March 19, the Greek constructing company “Aktor” and the Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency agreed to construct the Struma Highway, connecting the Bulgarian capital with Greece.

The work is expected to be completed in 23 months, despite the fact that there have been many delays.  Bulgarian archaeologists discovered ancient silver and bronze coins as well ceramics and several tombs and parts of ancient buildings in the area and thus, the works had to stop.

According to Bulgarian, construction of the highway was delayed by seven months because, in addition to the ancient findings, the “Trace Group Hold” company appealed the selection of Greek “Aktor” company for the bid in constructing the highway.

This work will make trips of Bulgarians traveling to Greece and the opposite easier, shorter and much more comfortable. This highway is regarded to be really important for Bulgaria’s trade ties with Greece.

Furthermore, the highway will be the first ever constructed in Bulgaria protecting the country’s wild life. It will have five overpasses, three underpasses, two railroad underpasses and seven bridges.

Despite the delays, about 19 kilometres of the Struma Highway have already been completed. The road begins outside Sofia, close to Daskalovo region, is connected with the Lyulin Highway and ends at the Bulgarian-Greek borders.

The work is funded by the EU Transport Program with the total cost of the 173 km long Struma Highway being  estimated at about 1.1 billion euros.
