Austrian Paper Reports that Less Tourists are Visiting Greece this Year

Austrian Kleine Zeitung newspaper reports that “Greece falls 1oth place.” The Austrian editor declares that Austrians’ reservations for vacation in Greece have been decreased by 20%.

According to the report, Italy, Croatia and Spain are Austria’s most popular destinations this year while Austrians, despite tour operators’ efforts to convince them that the Greek islands are completely safe, appear to trust and choose Greece much less than they did in past years.

Reservations for Greece have dropped by 20% this year in comparison with 2011 while even last year’s numbers have further decreased by 11% compared to 2010. According to Austrian institute “Integral,” Greece dropped from place four to place 10.

Director general of Thomas Cook travel organization in Austria, Mr Ioannis Afykatoudis of Greek descent, says that this situation could be improved, not far though, if tourists choose Greece in last-minute-reservations as a vacation destination.

Another today article of Kleine Zeitung declares that flights from Austria’s second biggest airport, that of Gratz, to Thassos, Carpathos and Cephalonia have been cancelled due to low demand while flights to Zante, Crete, Kos, Lemnos, Naxos, Rhodes, Santorini and Skiathos have not been affected.

On the other hand, the tourist office that offered these three flights says that their clients will fly to Thassos, Carpathos and Cephalonia from Vienna’s airport. They add also that after the Greek elections, reservations from Austria have shown an increase.

Moreover, in contrast to negative reports of Kleine Zeitung, Austrian newspaper Die Presse wrote that “anyone visiting Greece for vacation is not at all in danger while at the same time is supporting those not responsible for the crisis, that is islanders of Crete for example.”
