Journalist, Writer and Filmmaker Nestoras Matsas Dead at 82

Journalist, director and distinguished author Nestoras Matsas died on Thursday, June 28th at the age of 82.
Nestoras Matsas was born in Athens in 1930 and studied journalism, theatre and cinema in Paris, having received a sponsorship by the French government.
He first worked as a theatre critic in 1949 for the National Herald newspaper. He later worked for the Mesimvrini, Vradini, Estia newspapers and the Epikera and Nea Estia magazines. For many years, he was working for state TV station EIRT (National Television and Radio Foundation) and the Greek armed forces’ TV channel YENED. Mr Matsas was also a visiting scholar at several foreign universities and professor at many educational seminars organized by the Greek Editors’ Union ESIEA.
In conjunction with journalism, he also dealt with literature. Matsas has written 35 books, many of which have been translated into foreign languages including Chinese. He has been awarded international distinctions for his work while he was the first Greek filmmaker to introduce ethnographic documentaries in Greece and present such programmes to Greek television.
Matsas hosted many TV shows and filmed 150 ethnographic documentaries.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, June 30 at 11 o’clock at the cemetery of Kesariani.
