Greek Language Remains Strong in Australia

Despite the anxiety of academics about the future of the Greek language abroad, National Statistical Service of Australia reports that Greek language remains alive and well in the country. This result came about as a result of  Australia’s 2011 population census published on Thursday.

According to this report, 252,218 residents of Australia mentioned they speak Greek despite the fact that the number of Greek Australians born in Greece has been reduced by 33,000 during the past five years.

At the same time, Greek Australian communities and Greeks working in Australian universities try to promote Greek language and Hellenic studies in the country. They often express the fear that less and less people speak Greek abroad and thus, organize conferences to try to develop technologies and offer possibilities -mostly online- for anyone willing to learn this language even through distance learning.
