5.4 Magnitude Quake Shakes Victoria

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook Victoria last night at 8:53 pm and lasted for 30 seconds, Geoscience Australia spokesman Chris Thompson said.

The earthquake had an epicentre 16km southwest of Moe at Coalville in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, and registered at 9.9 kilometres underground. More than 60 aftershocks hit the area near Moe last night as well. Experts said that more aftershocks may follow over the coming days and even weeks.

Residents of Victoria state are anxious due to the high magnitude of the tremor. It is Victoria’s largest earthquake in more than a century.

The State Emergency Service (SES) received over 40 calls for help. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported but only some low level building damage. Police officers called on locals to contact only police in the event of an emergency.
