The new generation of Greeks is trying to show everyone that Greece can still hold its own and that their ideas are able of winning accolades. Filmmakers and athletes are both doing their best to send the message that Greeks have much to offer.
This time, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos won the Sydney Film Festival with his drama “Alps.” The movie was chosen from 12 competition finalists and the $60,000 prize is Australia’s greatest cash award for film. As is obvious, this prize is a rather an important one for a film “made in Greece.”
Head of the festival’s jury, Rachel Ward, told the Sydney Morning Herald that “Alps” “melds pathos, black humour and taut menace. ‘Alps’ is an intelligent movie from an important new voice in Greek cinema.”
Yorgos Lanthimos became famous after he directed “Dogtooth.” For this movie, he received the “UnCertain Regard” prize at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. As for ‘Alps,’ he has also been awarded Best Screenplay at the 68th Venice Film Festival. Lanthimos has collaborated with other new Greek directors, such as Athina Rachel Tsangari for the Attenberg film.
