Bulgaria to Send Unit to Help Greece Put Out the Fires

This hot weekend brought many fires to Greece. Firefighters are trying hard to put out the fires but high winds do not help. Some forest areas around Athens as well some in Peloponnese (southern Greece) are in great danger.

Neighboring Bulgaria decided to help Greece by sending a helicopter to aid. It was loaded with firefighting equipment. This decision was made after European Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva had a phone conversation with Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov. Georgieva informed him that the EU’s purpose is to protect its citizens and thus, the European civil protection mechanism should be activated.  What this practically amounts to is that neighboring countries should provide Greek firefighters with personnel and equipment in order to avoid great disasters.

Nikolay Nikolov, head of Bulgarian firefighting body, announced that 40 Bulgarian firefighters are about to travel to Greece, should such a situation arise.  Moreover, Italy has already sent personnel to Greece to operate on the ground.
