Blooded Greek Maenad Goes Viral

This shocking picture taken by the Greek “dimitristheathens” blogspot shows the situation of the country in the scope of an artist – in this case, of a photographer. He realizes the home country’s current condition as a nude woman, bloodied in the cervical area, holding the Greek flag at the place where a mother would hold her child.
Users of several social media all around the world, such as Facebook and Twitter, have published the picture in their personal profiles, creating a giant chain of the Greek bloodied Maenad, sharing the message of the concept: “We have a dream, we are still alive, we just want peace. But…we have to fight!”
The few-words-long slogan is what every Greek person thinks these days, that Greece struggles with the financial crisis and this may be a reason why this image became immediately popular.
Maenads were women of the ancient Greek mythology. They were nymphes, the female companions and followers of the God Dionysus. Maenas (in singular) is a synonym for “frenzy” and first appeared in Homeric texts. Indeed, the main characteristic of the Maenads was their ecstatic moves, often inspired by the worship of Dionysus – the God of wine, orgies and frenzy, as well. Through a combination of dancing and intoxication, they lost self-control, began shouting excitedly and got involved in hyperactive, totally illogical and extremely violent behavior.
“In modern Greece, the Maenads exist and continue to upset,” concludes the photographer.
