Greek Germans Travel to Greece by Bike to Send Solidarity Message

Two Greek Germans, Nikos Radis and Vassilis Kirtzakis will pack their rucksacks to ride from Germany to Athens, in order to send their fellow countrymen a message of optimism and solidarity. They will start from Stuttgart on July 7 and arrive in Athens, at the Acropolis via Igoumenitsa after 15 days.

They are  not professional riders, not even athletes, just two active 30-year-old Greek men who decided to make this symbolic movement for their home country. “What we want to show to both Greeks and Germans, is that truth is completely different to what media show. Germans have exaggerated and so did Greeks. Our message is that if Greeks want to do something, even in the ‘black’ periods, they can do it.”

And they continue that they have never tried this before. “We use our mountain bikes, the world’s simplest means of transport, to cross the Alps and reach our beloved Greece,” they explain.

The two men expressed their fear about this decision. They are not afraid of the Alps route, because, as they say, there are many riders in this area, so there will be many other people around willing to help, should a situation arise.

“We will not feel completely [like] strangers,” they add.

On the contrary, they feel more anxious about the “Greek” part of their route. “Upon our arrival in Igoumenitsa, we will have to ride our bikes in many not so known routes, as there are not bicycle lanes in Greece’s main roads.”
