Successful Greek Language Teaching Conference Held in Melbourne

The Modern Greek Teachers Association of Victoria (MGTAV) held their annual conference “The Greek Language in Australia – Sustainability, Maintenance and Diversity” on May 17. The conference took place at the Jika International Conference Center in Melbourne, attended by almost 70 teachers.

Taking into account that this was on only one small language – Greek – this conference could be described as successful.

Its purpose is that participants discuss issues in language education and see new resources available for teaching the Greek language in Australia, especially the Internet. MGTAV, in collaboration with the Greek Ministry of Education and the Department of Education Employment and Training, have undertaken, all these years, a range of initiatives to improve and promote the teaching of Greek in Victoria.

The key subject of this year’s conference was the application of the e-learning program in Australia, with representatives of the University of Crete explaining to attendees how it works.

The seminar was held in Greek, but the papers given to attendees after the event and the details about the conference in the MGTAV website was in English.

Many Australian educational institutes took part in the 2012 conference. The Greek Consulate Education Service, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and the Victorian School of Languages (VSL) are only few of them. Representatives of Australia-based bilingual day schools attended the event in order to examine the digital possibilities of promoting Greek language in the country.
