German Travel Group Warns Tourists in Greece to Expect Possible Return to Drachma

Tourism is the ultimate ‘industry’ of Greece. Due to the crisis, tourists seem to be choosing neighboring destinations this year in contrast to previous ones. Now, German travel group TUI is advising their clients, who travel to Greece individually, to have a lot cash with them, in case our country exits the Eurozone.

In reality, 2,000,000 Germans visit Greece with a travel group each year. This means that they pay for all their expenses in advance!

President of SETE – Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises – Mr Andreas Andreadis stressed the fact that TUI is trying to convince Greek hoteliers, by means of indirect extortion, that Greece may return to the drachma soon, so they should make offers for the German visitors, not only for this year but also for the next one. Many Greek companies are negotiating in this period of time with the German travel group about the vacation packages offered in 2013.

German tourists appear to have booked their vacations in Greece in numbers 30% lower than in 2012. However, this trend has changed a little bit during May – unfortunately, not dramatically – due to the great offers made by the Greek tourism professionals, which include deals 15% cheaper than last year.

In April, the officials of the airport of Heraklion in Crete reported an increase in Germans’ arrivals on the island.  Due to this mixed data, the true outcome of this year’s tourist season, especially regarding German visitors to Greece, still remains to be seen.
