Matala Festival 2012 Attracts Visitors From Around the World

The Matala Festival is a 3-day music festival with beach parties right in front of the famous caves with music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, the sound and music of the legendary woodstock festival, an attractive program with all kinds of activities like a hippie bazaar, and hippie events, acoustic live music, concerts, happenings, exhibitions, children’s fun parks, and lots more!
Ever since the day that the festival’s program was announced, which will take place June 2-4, tourist hotels have been booked by 80%, and during the following week, full occupation is expected.
The Municipality provides visitors with the alternative of camping in the Municipal Camping area of Matala for free. Unfortunately, the public cannot stay in the caves as they are archaeological sites.
The documentaries, and the fact that John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell were inspired for many of their songs in the famous caves, have contributed to the increasing wave of arrivals from European countries for the three-day festival.
The Municipality of Festos in collaboration with the District of Heraklion and cultural associations of the region have worked towards making the Matala Festival even more exciting than last year.
The lead singer from the Greek music band Ksilina, Spathia Pavlos Pavlidis, showman and song-maker Panos Mouzourakis, Michalis Tzouganakis, unique singer Despina Olympioy, Greek Idol winner Panagiotis Tsakalakos as well as the biggest tribute band to The Doors, are some of the names that will perform during the Festival of Matala 2012.
