Gina Rinehart is the richest woman in Australia and the entire world. Hancock Prospecting heiress Gina Rinehart amassed a staggering $29.17 billion, up from $10.3 billion in 2011, making her the richest woman in the world, according to BRW’s 2012 Rich 200 list.
Fellow compatriots also made it to the 200 list. They are seven businessmen whose life in Australia turned into a very lucky one. The richest Greek in Australia is former owner of Panachaiki, Kostas Makris, with $910 million. During the last year, he was the only Greek-Australian whose fortune amounted to more than a billion, but according to the magazine he lost $97 million. He and his son own a real estate business in South Australia, as well as shopping malls, such as the Optus House in Adelaide and the Bonnyridge Plaza outside Sydney.
The Paspalis family is the second Greek entry in the 200 Rich list, known in Australia for its mushroom cultivation (South Sea). The family’s assets amount to $900 million. The Paspalis’ also own a local airline company and estates in Sydney and Darwin.
Kerry Harmanis is the third Greek-Australian who made it to the list, having a $570 million fortune. Theodoros Karidis is the fourth richest Greek-Australian, with $470 million assets. He is active in real estate and liquor businesses.
The Stamoulis family follows with a $453 million fortune. Giorgos Koukis from Chalkida is the sixth one, possessing $315 million (Temenos). According to the Swiss magazine Bilanz, he is the fifth richest Greek in Switzerland.
Last but not least, Melbourne travel agent Spyros Alysandratos from Kefalonia is the seventh entry, with a $245 million fortune.
