Online Teaching Program to Promote Greek Language in Australia

Greek Australians make significant attempts to support Hellenic Studies in Australia and to promote the Greek language.

Last Tuesday, academic Chris Evans of the Federal Minister of Tertiary Education had a meeting with representatives of the LOGOS Australian Centre for Hellenic Language and Culture Center of Flinders University and discussed the current condition of Greek language studies in Australia.

They aspire to organize an online teaching program to educate students willing to learn Greek and other community languages of Australia via the Internet.

The benefits of this program are obvious. Languages struggling to survive will be given a significant boost, while students living in smaller cities would have the chance to attend the lessons without moving out and spending a great amount of money.

At Australian tertiary level, there are more than 200 community languages being taught and thus, it is a difficult task for the Australian government to finance all these programs. The online teaching program would be beneficial for both languages and Australia’s financial situation.

Director of LOGOS, Professor Michael Tsianikas, said that this program will be not just a database but an interactive online program. In order to run it, academics should cooperate for at least four years.

“We were very fortunate when the Government of SA decided last year to support LOGOS with a grant of $600,000 for scholarships and to develop a dynamic online program” he said.

But for Tsianikas, sponsorships, no matter how generous they are, cannot offer sustainability to such programs. He stresses the fact that there is the need for permanent solutions, “to develop centers in Australia supporting these online programs.”

In his opinion, Greek Communities should take action immediately to prevent the collapse of every Greek-centered program in Australia.
