Greek Festival of Sydney Presents Event Honoring John Cassavetes

The 30th Greek Festival of Sydney presents “John Cassavetes and the Cinema of the Outsider as cultural hero.” Associate Professor Vrasidas Karalis (University of Sydney) will be the speaker of the event, honoring one of the most radical innovators in modern American cinema.

From his earliest film, “Shadows” (1959), until his death, Cassavetes (1929-1989) established a powerful and successful anti-mainstream cinematic tradition, which on many occasions antagonized the dominant Hollywood establishment.

Cassavetes’ cinema re-invented the art of film representation in a manner that needs closer examination and interpretation. The lecture will explore the biography and career of the obscure Greek-American who took risks with his art and redefined the parameters of cinematic experience.
