Sharp Increase of Greek Doctors in German Hospitals

Germany appears to be flooded with Greek doctors. Recent data showed that Greece has been pumping German hospitals with doctors, followed by the fact that scientists’ immigration has sharply increased during the last years as a result of the financial crisis.

1,500 Greek doctors worked in Germany back in 2007, while today that number amounts to 6,000. Job agencies that work with German practices are reported to gain a respectable bonus every time they have a Greek doctor hired.

Many of them are confronted with uncomfortable working conditions, which most of the time are nothing like what they initially expected. So they are found with a difficult situation: Work in Germany or return to their debt-hit Homeland?

An article in Kathimerini newspaper reports that the greatest problem Greek doctors face is due to the German language. They might be familiar with the German medical terminology, but they are not able to communicate with patients who – of course – use the common spoken language, sometimes blended with idiomatic expressions.

Most doctors tend to believe that they will be hired in German hospitals in big cosmopolitan cities, but they are found in small clinics, sometimes in remote towns and villages.
