13 Greek Movies to be Presented in Berlin!

The Hellenic Cultural Institute of Berlin and Greek Film Center have organized a film festival with Greek movies in Berlin. Arsenal cinema presents, until May 30, 13 modern Greek movies filmed from 2009 through 2012.

Despite the financial crisis, these filmmakers manage to film impressive and innovative films, showing Greece’s modern artistic quality.

Many Greek movies have been awarded several prizes during the past years, including American and European festivals.

Yorgos Lanthimos, director of the “Alps” and “Dogtooth,” will attend the Berlin festival May 4-5. “Dogtooth” was distinguished in many international film festivals, including winning the Un Certain Regard award at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Lanthimos has a habit of shooting his characters from behind, or half out of frame, keeping them mysterious and unknowable,” reports Guardian newspaper.

Athina Tsagari, who directed “Attenberg,” will also join Arsenal. The Greek film will be released to the German public and European cinema lovers on May 10.

The New York Times published an article about “Attenberg,” titled “Born of 1,000 Influences, an Original Look at Love.” The journalist wrote, in regards to both Lanthimos and Tsangari: “Some critics, noting Ms. Tsangari’s and Mr. Lanthimos’s taste for absurdism and interest in stylized meta-performance, have installed them at the forefront of a Greek new wave.”

Syllas Tzoumerkas is another Greek filmmaker. He directed the “Homeland” in 2010, starring Amalia Moutoussi, and will be presented in the German capital as well. The most intriguing thing about this drama-thriller film is that the classroom scenes were filmed with real students that knew nothing about the script.
