Odysseas Elitis' Partner Asks For Withdrawal of New Democracy Pre-election Ad

Strong reaction from Greek poet and Nobelist Odysseas Elitis’ partner, Ioulitas Iliopoulou, regarding a New Democracy ad that includes verses of Elitis’ poems as well as photos from his Nobel Awards ceremony; she is asking for the withdrawal of the campaign spot.
She is claiming ”the poems, the morality and the thoughts of Elitis are national property of very high importance and they don’t belong to any political party. We must pay some respect to that. I ask the withdrawal of the spot in honor of his memory and his beliefs.”
In the ad, New Democracy uses some verses from Elitis’ poem ”Ilios o Protos.” The leader of the party, Antonis Samaras, asks voters to give him the opportunity to show ”what it means to Greece – dignity and power of the soul; exactly what Elitis wanted to say when he was writing about Greek people.”
It is not the first time that a relative has asked a political party not to use someone’s work for their campaign. The daughter of composer Manos Loizos asked PASOK to stop using ”Kalimera Ilie, Kalimera,” a distinctive song for its political rallies, because the beliefs of her father don’t agree with the politics of the party.
