Benaki Museum of Athens to Host Sean Scully's 'Doric Order'

Internationally acclaimed Irish-American artist Sean Scully will be presenting his work for the first time to the Greek audience from May 8-July 14, 2012. The exhibition will be hosted at the Benaki Museum (Piraeus Street) in Athens and will showcase different artworks inspired by the Greek capital city.
The exhibition is entitled “Doric Order” and revolves mainly around six monumental (as far as their dimensions are concerned) Doric paintings that the artist has been working on since 2009. Scully’s works reflect an architectural order and these new paintings take these principles to new levels. Also, watercolor paintings and screen printings from Scully’s thirty year artistic career will be exhibited.
Sean Scully has been nominated twice (1989 and 1993) for the Turner Prize, which is annually presented to a contemporary British visual artist under the age of 50. His work has been hosted at many art galleries in the USA and Europe as well as private collections, and some of the most prominent Museums of the world, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and the Tate Modern in London.
Scully spends his time today between New York, Barcelona and Munich, and holds a teaching position at the Fine Arts Academy of the Bavarian capital city.
