Crete Honors French Philhellene Jean Claude Schwendemann

French professor and Alsace-Crete Association President Jean-Claude Schwendemann met with District Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis today, who honored him.
“Amidst that difficult situation for your country we are even closer to you, we are all Greeks,” noted Schwendemann, adding, “I haven’t met any other people, who have struggled more for their freedom than Cretans.”
He expressed his optimism for Greece – as he knows its people are struggling – saying that it will overcome the economic crisis with the help of everyone, as “we are all Greeks.” He also pointed out that the same “disease” is threatening all of Europe.
Greece has the remedy and the solutions to that disease, according to Schwendemann, and they are to be traced in Greek hospitality and alternative tourism. Greece, he added, sets a hospitality example and should continue in the same steps. Regarding the French national elections, the ambassador didn’t hide his preference for socialist Hollande, explaining that his election will not only benefit France but Greece as well.
The District Governor also offered the French professor the book “Crete,” that has been translated in three languages.
The philhellene and phil-Cretan Frenchman hasn’t stopped visiting the island for the past 32 years, while he also hosts groups of businessmen and teachers in theme events he organizes. He teaches French literature and offers ancient Greek and Latin classes abroad.
Jean-Claude Schwendemann established the Alsace-Crete Association in 1996, which has since gained 1,050 members.
