A Porn Star Wants To Save Greece

“Maybe I will vote for Julia,” says Mr. Antonis, a 55-year-old plumber from Pireus. “I don’t know. At least she works, unlike the three hundred drone bees we’ve been feeding for thirty years. What’s the difference? It’s not like the others from Yale and Harvard did anything good for us. At least she’s pretty and honest!”
“Julia” is none other than the Greek Ciciolina. She’s the porn star who wants to become an MP, the force of nature whose scandalous career broke every taboo. Νοw, Julia Alexandratou is determined to replace her provocative miniskirts and cover her long legs with elegant Chanel suits. She wants to leave behind the singing career and erotic DVDs for the sake of politics.
Who’s Julia
Alexandratou is a Greek socialite, media personality, glamour model, singer, actress, and pornographic actress. In 2002, at age 16, she won the beauty pageant title “Miss Young” in Greece. It’s not surprising she was picked – photographs of her as a teenager show a striking beauty with a long straight nose and blue eyes, blonde hair swept back behind her ears. The avaricious, lustful grin that became her trademark was still a few years in the future. Four years later, Alexandratou won the title “Miss Greece International 2006” at the Miss Star Hellas beauty pageant. In 2010, a controversial celebrity sex tape featuring Alexandratou was released. She later admitted that she was paid for her participation in the film. In 2011, Alexandratou attracted controversy again after the release of a second pornographic video.
From Porn To Parliament
A couple of months ago, Julia said that she intended to emigrate to the States due to the crisis. Greek blogs expressed their disappointment that Greece cannot sustain financially, not only its youth but also its best paid porn star. Greek blogger Pitsirikos, who had interviewed her about her future plans, said that Julia had put things in the right order. She would try her luck in the American porn industry and, if things didn’t go well, she’d return to a political party. Apparently things didn’t go well so Julia activated plan B.
Alexandratou announced her intention to run with Mr. Vergis alongside the Outraged Ecologists of Greece a couple of weeks ago. Greek Ecologists is an ecological party which supports the legalization of cannabis and unrestricted nudism. “You never know, people might vote for me just to state their reaction to the current situation,” said the blonde porn celebrity.
Julia’s Manifesto
Julia argues that if she gets a place in parliament, the Greek youth will have a voice. “We’ll change everything together! We do not forgive, we do not punish! We will abolish the parliamentary immunity. We need to get back all the money the parliamentary crooks took from us even with real estate seizures. The next move will be the exploitation of our mineral resources,” said the famous porn star in an interview with Greek Playboy.
Greeks have been so let down by lawmakers and  lawgivers that Alexandratou might be voted by people who want  to show their repulsion to the current political system, and instead of bashing banks they would die to see Venizelos or Samara’s face as Ms. Alexandratou becoming the MP.
If Julia ever stood a chance to be elected, it would be now. Both major parties are rapidly losing support and even together they may not be able to form a coalition government on their own. New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras is tainted by sins of previous conservative administrations as he was a leading minister in Karamanis’ government. He’s actually one of the saddest of the political figures; an unpopular populist. His constant policy flip-flopping has lost him support both within his own party and with the electorate in general. Venizelos, on the other hand, is basically one of the two guys that brought the IMF in Greece two years ago (the other one being George Papandreou).
Yet Greece is no Italy. Just like Greeks would probably never vote for Berlusconi, they probably won’t vote for Julia. Greece’s conservative collectivist culture will, in the end, stop those voters who say they‘ll vote for her just to show their disappointment in politicians. Mainstream media, commentators and politicians being interviewed avoid mentioning her name. It appears to be a pact to ignore the blond porn star whose candidacy embarrasses the Greek parliament.
Julia’s Revolution
Some say that indeed Julia is a revolutionary. She has thrown her outstanding beauty in the garbage and denied all the petty bourgeois aspirations for professional success and social recognition. While she could have easily married a tycoon and have no worries about the crisis whatsoever – like all Miss Greece/models/celebrities in Greece have done before her – she prefers ridiculing herself as a mirror of the current moral decay Greece is facing today, which in itself is a type of revolution, even if it’s fully unconscious. Yet Alexandratou doesn’t realize that this is just another form of exploitation, this time in suits and in parliament; more exploitation, for different and more abstract ends, but barely less cynical than that of the porno barons who have been making money out of her for the last couple of years.
