Australian Movie About Alzheimer’s Documents Greek Woman’s Experience

Greek-Australian Carol Liavis is one of the three people sharing their personal experience of Alzheimer’s disease with the public. The new film “Dementia: Taking the Next Step” is an initiative of the Victorian branch of Alzheimer’s, Australia.

Carol Liavis uses her personal experience to provide families of Alzheimer’s sufferers information about the disease and mostly, to let them know that they are not alone.

Liavis’ father was diagnosed with dementia 16 years ago and the entire family, according to the Greek-Australian, felt confused. “You are just in a state of real numbness and overwhelmed with what lies ahead,” says Liavis.

She admits that such a film would have been great support for her family. That’s why she came up with the film’s idea, in order to give Alzheimer’s sufferers and their families the chance to watch an informative piece, which they could also review as many times as they need.

“You can’t really absorb the enormity of the information given to you verbally from a doctor or a specialist, so this DVD could give you a hand at the early stages of the disease.”

The film is available free of charge and can be requested from the Cognitive Dementia and Memory Services (CDAMS) in Victoria, Australia, as well as from other Victorian health organizations assisting people in the early stages of diagnosis.
