16 Businessmen From Greece and Cyprus Make ‘Sunday Times’ 2012 ‘Rich List’

According to a recent article in The Sunday Times regarding Britain’s Rich List, it seems that “money goes to money” indeed. The newspaper reports that the wealthiest men of Britain have become richer than ever, possessing total assets of £508 billion (£414 billion), despite the fact that the country is experiencing its worst recession since the 1930s.

The annual Sunday Times catalogue presenting the country’s top richest shows there are 16 Greeks and Cypriot businessmen who made the list. The Rich List 2012 was compiled by Philip Beresford, the leading authority on British wealth.

The article titled, “Record Wealth for Britain’s Rich,” puts “Mr. Easy Jet,” Stelios Chatziioannou in 72nd place, possessing £1,015 billion assets, while more Greek ship-owners and businessmen such as Ar. Mystakides, John Goulandris, Mich. Lemos, Alkis David as well as the Leventi Tryphon Natsis and Nick Rhodites families are found in the 1,000 wealthiest of Britain’s list.

Greek-Cypriot Chris Lazaris, a real estate broker, takes 107th place since he owns £750 million. Active in the real estate industry, John Christodoulou (£670 million), An. Panagiotis (£400 million), Dion. Liberas ((£215 million), stationery stores owner Thio Paphites ((£180 million), brothers Stefanos and Stelios Stefanou (construction business) possessing £140 million, and Pan. Panagiotou, also in real estate, possessing £74 million, are also on the list. Singer George Michael, who comes from Cyprus, is also listed as one of Britain’s wealthiest.

The wealthiest man in Britain for the second year in a row is Indian-English Lakshmi Mittal, possessing total assets of £12.7 billion (steel industry). Famous Russian investor Roman Abramovich is third place, with personal assets of £9.5 billion.
