Bidding Concludes for Former Athens Airport

The first part has ended in the competition to develop the area of the former international airport of Athens, the Hellinikon.
”Participation in the first part of the competition by important investors specialized in this type of work constitutes a vote of confidence for Greece’s future,” said Environment Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou after the bidding deadline.
The Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (TAIPED) will release the names of the investors who meet the criteria for the subsequent phase of the competition soon, who will then be invited to submit proposals which will bring forward financial groups willing to invest in the operation.
The local press reports that it is one of the largest real estate initiatives in the Mediterranean. Hellinikon A.E. intends to then begin work on an area covering 6.2 million square meters, including the former airport, uncultivated areas and a 3.5 kilometer long beach, on the basis of an entrepreneurial project to be presented by the investor.
