Greek-Canadians Enjoy a Traditional Easter

Greek-Canadians in Montreal celebrated Jesus’ Resurrection in twelve of the Greek-Orthodox churches in the city. The faithful Christians flooded the churches and revived every religious tradition, despite being so far away from home.

Greeks of Montreal exchanged Easter wishes, while Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios of Toronto held the Resurrection service in the Church of Archangels.

Metropolitan of Canada Sotirios released a Paschal Encyclical in which he particularly referred to the truth of the Christian feast: “I come back to myself. I understand that I have sinned, that I have broken and destroyed the living icon of Christ that I am. I have torn the garment of the Bridegroom with my sins. I have darkened the beauty of my soul. I yell out as I am fallen and disheveled: ‘Lord, save me!’ Then I hear the familiar voice, ‘My child, arise again.’ I feel the stable and strong hand of the Risen One picking me up. I see and recognize the Risen Christ. My Lord and God. I live in the Risen Lord, for it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”

The good weather during the Great Week encouraged hundreds of Christians to celebrate the Christian feast by attending the Divine Liturgies that took place in the Orthodox churches of Montreal on Great Friday, and particularly in Park Extension where the Greek element is widely present.

Greek-Canadians celebrated on Easter Sunday, reviving the lamb tradition and listening to Greek music in their homes. Red eggs, traditional biscuits and pastries (“tsoyrekia”) completed the celebrations.
