Greek Extremist Parties Head for the Parliament

Elections on May 6 fascinate European journalists because after many years, there is the possibility for the two big political parties not getting enough votes, and therefore, not having a one-party government.
According to polls, six parties are expected to enter the Greek Parliament and there may be a coalition government. May 6 will be the first time in Greece’s modern history that PASOK and New Democracy are not leaders of the situation.
Austrian newspaper Die Presse published an article concerning the elections in Greece, titled “Extremists Spring.”
The Austrian journalist comments that “new political parties pop up like mushrooms. Sometimes they carry old characteristics, though.”
People in Greece are deeply disappointed by their former and current governments, by some of the Europeans’ policies, and they are looking for a party with new ideas. Those who guarantee an anti-memorandum program are supported by many citizens.
Small parties, whether new or not, struggle to prove they can offer a better future for Greece. But as happens in periods of great crisis – even political, financial or social – many people are willing to share the extremists’ opinions.
Evangelos Venizelos, President of the Socialists’ Party in Greece, commented on the current situation a few days ago. He said that the Greek Political party Golden Dawn “longs for fascism and nazism of the past.”
Golden Dawn and other similar chauvinist parties became popular with Greeks, due to the great number of illegal immigrants coming to Greece everyday. In the centre of Athens, residents and businessmen are terrified by their actions.
When citizen’s listen to Golden Dawn’s officials saying that “we need Greece with only Greeks living in it,” a proportion of them feel safe so they choose to vote for them.
The same happens with the left-wing parties as well. They hate memorandum, and that is something of interest for the average Greek family who faces financial problems due to austerity measures.
The Communists in Greece have established many parties over the years, but even now there are more being funded. They promise to give Greeks the solution, which can be translated into money and then into a peaceful life, and then into happiness…maybe.
