'Independent': "Greeks Suffer From the Most Idiotic Economic Experiment"

After the suicide of Dimitris Christoulas at Syntagma Square, journalist Amol Rajan writes in the British Independent that “Greece suffers from the most idiotic economic experiment in modern history.”
“Europe owes Greece a [reason],” he comments. The journalist was in Greece when Christoulas committed suicide and felt the need to write an article in order to support Greeks.
He strongly criticizes the European leaders and the fiscal incompetence and corruption of the previous Greek government. Moreover, he focuses on problems Greece deals with now due to salary cuts and measures imposed by the EU and the IMF.
As for the new Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, Rajan characterizes him as a “bureaucrat,” who Germany and France have imposed on the broken country.
“The ordeal is visible everywhere. You can’t have lunch without having beggars moving around you, without homeless people gathering on every corner of the road,” he comments. “Drug dealing takes place in broad daylight and students and anarchists have declared their violent, vengeful intentions in graffiti across the city.”
“What do we owe to Greek people?,” wonders the editor of the British paper, coming to the conclusion, “we owe them compassion, solidarity and support, as well as an excuse, if we campaign for the euro. The country which made the whole European culture evolve, pays now the penalty for the most idiotic economic experiment in modern history.”
