Roberto Benigni: "Europe Owes Greece Everything"

Roberto Benigni visited Thessaloniki. For what reason, you ask? In a crowded room, in front of thrilled people, the Italian actor was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the Department of Italian Language and Literature.
Benigni is a famous actor and director, and Oscar winner, who has starred in many successful movies. Rumor has it that he is a very enthusiastic person, and it proved to be true as he jumped on the benches to celebrate his academic title. Dressed in a gown, he flapped his cap smiling widely.
“It is, indeed, a very important moment for our University,” commented the rector of the Aristotle University, Yannis Mylopoulos. He added that this conferment offers “spiritual wealth” to the University.
Professor Emeritus Katerina Evangellou stated that Roberto Benigni is the most renowned ancestor of the great tradition of the royal court jesters, as well as of the Commedia dell’Arte theatre.
The Italian actor started his speech speaking Greek. “Eyxaristo,” he said. “Kalispera. Geia sas agapimenoi mou filoi. Thelo na sas filisw sto stoma. H kardia mou xtupaei dunata (Thank you. Good evening. Hello, my dear friends. I want to kiss you on the lips. My heart is beating strongly),” announced Bengini to a surprised audience. They thanked him with loud applause.
But his speech included some economical comments as well. “Greece doesn’t owe anything,” he said, “but the whole world, Europe too, owes Greece everything.”
Benigni also read a passage from Dantes’ “Divine Comedy.”
