Contemporary Byzantine Icons Exhibition to be Presented in Trieste

The Centre of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Italy, the Greek Community of Trieste and the St. Paul Monastery of Mount Athos, Greece, jointly organize an exhibition entitled “The Face of the Absolute: Contemporary Byzantine Icons from the Holy Mount Athos.”

The exhibition will feature 80 contemporary artworks created by Mount Athos monks and will be inaugurated at the venue of the Greek community of Trieste, “Sala Giubileo” (via Mazzini, 3) on Thursday, April 5, at 6pm.

All artworks are painted by the most prominent artists of iconography at the Nea Skiti monastery, which belongs to the St. Paul’s Monastery.

The icons feature the holy faces of Christ, Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints of the Christian tradition as well as miracles and scenes inspired from the Gospels. Although the artworks are contemporary creations, they are all characterized by the byzantine craftsmanship as has survived through the ages.

The exhibition will also feature traditional products and objects from Mount Athos. The revenues from the exhibition will be solely used to finance the reconstruction and restoration of the metochi of St. Nicholas the Monoksylitis.

The exhibition will stay open until April 19.
