A bill with which he seeks to put an end to chemical use throughout demonstrations in big Greek city streets, and therefore bring a little more peace upon them, was presented on Monday by Mr. George Kaminis, Mayor of Athens.
A draft law provides that protests involving small numbers of protesters will take place on sidewalks. Specifically, the bill provides that the organizer of an outdoor assembly should first inform police at least 24 hours before the impending march, and on the other hand he bears the burden of responsibility for any incidents that may occur during the demonstration. In other words the organizer of a protest is responsible for the compensation of any damages to properties or physical integrity of persons participating in the demonstration.
All this will be done following the Greek Constitution and the constitutionally guaranteed right of assembly. The innovative bill of law includes 16 articles and has been sent by Mr. Kaminis to all political parties, asking them to take a stand on the issue.
As he stated, this is a proposal which aims to be a useful tool for preparation of legal texts which will contribute to “the start of an open, sincere and sober public debate”. The Mayor of Athens made a move for which he was praised by the local press. Let’s expect it to be actually implemented by the Greek MPs.
