A New Turkish Challenge in the Aegean Due to Kastelorizo

Kastelorizo is causing disputes once again in the Aegean. Turks want to put the subject of the continental shelf of Kastelorizo on the table, repeating their request according to which islands should not have any shelf and also be fully demilitarized as the international law imposes.

This time the Turkish challenge was accompanied by a note to the Greek government, allegedly because the Samothrace agreement was breached due to a military exercise.

Following its known tactics, Turkey once again violated large areas of the Aegean with a note to the Greek Parliament about conducting aeronautical exercises, some of which were within the Athens FIR.

The Head of aeronautical issues of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs made public statements claiming that the area of Kastelorizo signifies Greece trying to violate the Turkish continental shelf, and stressed that islands are not fully a sea zone, accusing the Greek government of not dealing with the matter accordingly.

At the same time, Ankara released an explicit official statement concerning the joint exercise that our country conducted with Israel and the USA in the area of Samothrace island. According to the Turkish government, Samothrace should be fully demilitarized and Greece is violating the respective law.
