Archaeological Museum of Delphi Presents Exhibition on Ancient Greek Town of Empúries

Photographic material and documents from the excavations conducted in the ancient Greek town of Empúries in Spain will be presented at the Archaeological Museum of Delphi from April 27 to September 30.
The exhibition is co-organized by the 10th Ephorate of Pre-historic and Classic Antiquities and the Cervantes Institute, in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia and the Greek Archaeologists Association. Its main aim is to present and underline the important role ancient Greece has played in shaping the European identity.
Empúries, the most western colony of the ancient Greeks on the Mediterranean coast, is located at the Catalan comarca of Alt Empordà in Catalonia, Spain. Founded in 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea with the name of  Emporion, meaning “market”, the town is responsible for expanding the cultivation of olives and grapes, while the metals of the Pyrenees were the main source of wealth of the colony.
Empúries was later occupied by the Romans, but in the Early Middle Ages, when its exposed coastal position left it open to marauders, the town was abandoned.
The ruins are midway between the Costa Brava town of L’Escala and the tiny village of Sant Martí, and have been gradually coming to light since 1908.
