Russians Love Visiting Thessaloniki

Russian visitors have flooded Greece over the past years. According to today’s announcement of the Thessaloniki Hotels Association (THA), a further raise of 19% in Russian tourism is expected.

Thessaloniki will be full of Russians this summer. This preference comes as a result of the many options that the visitor of Thessaloniki has. The so-called “city breaks” (few days trips) around the city attract many Russian visitors.

They choose to spend their roubles in this city not only by visiting the monuments, the markets and the clubs of Thessaloniki, but also by tasting its gastronomy. Many close destinations complete this travel puzzle.

Swimming in Chalkidiki, visiting the archaeological site of Vergina and the preference of Pieria, buying fur coats in Kastoria and praying in the Holy Mountain of Athos or the Monastery of Great Meteoron are only some of the many possibilities for sightseeing that Northern Greece offers.

The Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia (SKG) is of great importance for this raise in the number of visitors. Moscow is connected to Thessaloniki by air. According to reports of the THA, in 2011, 39,486 Russians have spent the night in city hotels or in those of the surrounding areas. This number has increased by 62.83%, in contrast to the percentage of 2010.

Using the Moscow International Exhibition (MITT) as an opportunity, the General Secretary of THA, Michael Chrysochoidis, and the General Manager of the Thessaloniki Tourism and Marketing Organization, Nikos Sapountzis, got in contact with about 70 tour operators and travel agents, to whom they presented the advantages of visiting Thessaloniki.
