The students of the Elementary School of Drymos participated in the planting activities of the Municipality of Oreokastro due to World Forestry Day. The excellent weather conditions along with their enthusiasm marked the planting event, which was sponsored by the Chicago-based Greek American Institution “Plant your Roots in Greece”. The students planted 4,000 saplings and promised to “adopt” the trees and care for their proper growth.
“The tree-planting activities that are being held for the second time in collaboration with the Greek American Institution “Plant your Roots in Greece” and its President Theodoros Spiropoulos make us really proud” pointed out Theodoros Matsoukatidis, Deputy Mayor of Prasino.
Tree-planting activities in the Municipality of Penaeus
The Greek-American Institution also contributed to the planting of another 12,500 saplings in the forest of Thinon in the Municipality of Penaeus, the Municipality of Ilia and other local communities.
“There was a vast number of volunteering citizens, students from the schools of our Municipality, local associations and especially the volunteer firefighters from Bartholomio, that committed to care for the trees and water them”, added Dimitrios Vasilopoulos, Deputy Mayor of Bartholomio, who also warmly thanked the Institution of the expatriated Greeks.
A donation of 20,000 USD from the Institution will be allocated to cover the needs of the 1st Elementary School of Bartholomio and the reconstruction of a building where the active Youth Association, participating in every environmental activity, will be hosted.
The “Plant Your Roots in Greece” Foundation, based in Chicago (U.S.A.) has been active for over 10 years, organizing tree-planting activities in collaboration with local authorities throughout Greece. The philosophy of the foundation is to combine the ancient Greek values of respect towards nature with the Olympic ideal of volunteerism, promoting the spirit of reconciliation and the coexistence of mankind with the environment. Over 400,000 USD have been donated all these years towards tree-planting activities in Greece.
