Conservative Party Leader Samaras Visits Spain and Portugal

Conservative Nea Dimokratia (ND) leader, Antonis Samaras, is on an official visit to Spain and Portugal. Starting from today, the Greek party leader met with the Spanish PM, Mariano Rajoy Brey, and the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Jose Garcia-Margallo y Marfil.

On Sunday, Samaras will hold a meeting with the PM of Portugal, Pedro Passos Coehlo, in the latter’s office. The Greek politician will be accompanied on his visit by Head of Sector for Foreign Affairs of ND, P. Panayiotopoulos, deputy spokesperson, G. Mouroutis, special advisor of the Committee for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, M. Mavromatis, and deputy Head of Sector for Energy, M. Papageorgiou.

Through his two-day visit to the Iberian peninsula, which is organized within the framework of the pre-election campaign of the Greek conservative party, Samaras aims at boosting his image in the European political scene and transmitting a message of support to the Greek people sent by the conservative leaders of countries that are also experiencing the economic pressures of the EU, IMF and ECB.

According to ND members, the skyrocketing of Portugal’s deficit due to recession and the resistance of the Portuguese PM to implement further cuts are proving Samaras right for insisting that the Memorandum recipe will lead to a dead end if not complemented by development measures.

The whole ND campaign will most probably follow the same pattern of highlighting the opposition of Samaras to the Memorandum and the Troika suggestions implemented so far in Greece.
