Ferries to Stay Moored at Greek Ports as Seamen Launch Strikes

Ferries remained moored at ports across the country as Greek seamen launched rolling 48-hour strikes on Monday to protest at austerity reforms, radio reports said.
The maritime transport strike, which is expected to last at least until Thursday, is expected to severely disrupt services to and from the hundreds of Greek islands that are dependent on the services for their links with the mainland.
The Panhellenic Seamen‘s Federation announced the strike following failed talks with the government over cuts to pensions. They are also demanding the signing of collective labor contracts for 2012.
Thousands of farmers on the southern Mediterranean island of Crete are up in arms over the strike, saying their produce will rot if it is not transferred off the island.
