Key issues concerning expatriate Greeks were the focus of the meeting of SAE Secretary Dr. Olga Sarantopoulos with the President of the Democratic Left Fotis Kouvelis.
During the meeting, Mr. Kouvelis emphasized the main points of the policy of his party in terms of strategy for Greeks abroad. He gave special emphasis to the issue of Expatriate taxation, for which he has made interventions with the Minister of Finance. He described the issue of Greek-speaking education vital for maintaining the identity of Greeks abroad, and emphasized the importance of the role of the Diaspora, especially in these critical times.
As concerns the issue of expatriate investment in Greece, which is necessary for the reorganization of the state and the development of the country, he said that the state should ensure a clean and stable tax landscape to attract expatriate investors.
Mr.Kouvelis also pointed out that the Greek Diaspora should have its deputies-representatives in the House of Parliament. This can be realized by changing the electoral law.
As far as the World Council of Hellenes Abroad SAE is concerned, Mr. Kouvelis reiterated his position that the body has to be reorganized to become autonomous financially, but at the same time operate without influence from the government. He stressed that there should be a change in the institutional framework for more transparency, not only financially but also in decision making.
The meeting with the President of the Democratic Left is part of the meeting program scheduled by the Secretary of SAE with the political leadership of the country in order to promote essential issues of the Greeks abroad.
