2012 Nostos Celebrations in Mani Begin on March 15

Delegations from the Mani originating residents of Cargese in Corsica and Montresta in Sardinia will be officially visiting Mani this week within the framework of the 191st anniversary celebrations for the revolution of the 17th of March in Areopolis and the Nostos festivities.
The Nostos event is a chance to bring together all Mani residents located in the two Italian islands and Greece. The event has been taking place annually for some time, and is always either organized in Cargese or in Mani. Nostos Mani 2012 festivities will be held this year at their homeland.
Within the event, the Municipality of Eastern Mani is organizing, on March 15, a scientific symposium revolving around the Mani Diaspora. Under the aegis of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Social Sciences and Institutions Department from Cagliari, Sardinia, the symposium will be hosted at the Cultural Centre of Gythio.
Eminent professors and academics will take part in the symposium including Prof. of Linguistics Mr. Dikaios Vayakakos, researcher Michel Stephanopoli de Comnène, praised for his work “Histoire des Grecs–Maniotes en Corse”, Italian Prof. from the University of Cagliari Stefano Pira and Prof. Jannis Korinthios from the University of Calabria. Other speakers will be attorney Gregory Lazarakos, President of the Maniotes Diaspora Association, and retired teacher Nikolaos Marambeas.
