International Women's Day Honored by the Greek Parliament

International Women’s Day was honored yesterday by the Greek Parliament, during a meeting that was held in the plenary session.
In his opening statement the President of the Greek Parliament, Filippos Petsalnikos, pointed out that “the Greek Parliament symbolically honors the year-lasting and continuous fight of women all across the world, a fight for dignity, for actual established equality and against all kinds of discrimination.”
“Phenomena of abusive treatment of women have not yet totally disappeared”, mentioned Petsalnikos. “Particularly in the field of work – despite the major increase of women in the workforce – studies show that there still is a significant equality ‘shortage’. Women are mostly hit by unemployment and poverty, as respective percentages indicate. They are provided with less chances of employment and improvement of their work hierarchy, while unequal salaries are still undermining the established principle that can be summarized as follows: ‘equal payment for equal work’. The working mothers are experiencing even greater difficulties in everyday life.  Mothers of large families, mothers having a disabled child, mothers providing for a single-parent family often have tragically hard times.”
The President also referred to any type of violence against women: “Psychological and domestic violence, as well as sexual abuse are some of the types of violence that are often hard to identify” he noted, and explained that women in developing, non-democratic countries are experiencing a far worse situation, in cases where their human rights and their dignity are being violated.
Finishing his statement, the President of the Greek Parliament stressed that “We have the moral obligation to offer women the chance to exploit their abilities and strength, so as to contribute as equal citizens, not only in social coherence and balance, but also in politics, scientific progress and economic growth”.
