Iraklion: Archaeologist and Writer Chrisoyla Tzobanaki Passes Away

Having suffered a hypoglycemic shock, the well-known archaeologist, architect, mechanic and writer Chrisoyla Tzobanaki, suddenly passed away in the hospital where she was being treated. She was undoubtedly a great scientific figure of the city of Iraklion and her death brought grief upon the local people.
Chrisoyla Tzobanaki was mostly honored for promoting the monuments of Crete, and had served for years as the Head of Ephorate of Modern Monuments. Apart from her archaeological work, she was also a published writer. Some of the books she wrote are “The Architecture in Crete – Modern times” and the “Marine Trilogy of Khandax: The Port, the Shipyards, the Fortress on the Sea” etc.
One of her last public appearances was on the 8th of December 2011, when the Municipality of Iraklion presented her new book “Iraklion Autonomy (1898-1913)- Transition from the 19th to the 20th Century”. Despite her severe health problems, she attended the event that honored her writing work.
The memorial service of Chrisoyla Tzobanaki will be held tomorrow, on the 8th of March.
