Jobless Greek Shoots Two, Takes Hostages Over Layoff

3 people have been shot by an unemployed man at a factory in Komotini, 500 miles northeast of Athens, the BBC reports.
The shooter had reportedly been fired from the plant, which makes plastic goods such as wheely bins, eight months ago. The three men wounded are two factory workers and a police officer. Two other workers — both company drivers — have been taken hostage.
The AP reports that the man burst into the site with a shotgun and fired at the owner, who appears to have been wounded.
A labor source said he was angered after he had been laid off by the plant and not rehired as promised. “His colleagues told me that he had not eaten anything in four days,” Pantelis Magalios, head of a labor center in Komotini, told.
Conflicting reports suggest the shooter is either 52 or 61, and a father of two. One police source described him as “determined” to Reuters.
Police have surrounded the site and are attempting to negotiate, though there have been reports that special forces are planning to storm the building.
