Forest Fires Are the Biggest Threat for Seich Sou in Thessaloniki

Forest fires are the biggest danger threatening the Forest of Seich Sou in Thessaloniki, due to the local climate and its particular vegetation.
To avert catastrophic fires, a series of interventions and measures have been introduced including the regular removal of trash dumped on the peripheral forest, the pruning of trees and their protection from plant diseases, as well as the preservation and guarding of forest recreation places and trails.
The above mentioned proposals were discussed in a meeting held at the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia-Thrace. The meeting was attended by the Secretary General, the Vice Prefect of Thessaloniki, and representatives from the municipalities, the Brigade Services, the Forest Direction and Citizen Protection Office.
Among the Administration’s proposals aimed at receiving funds from the Agricultural Development Program for Greece 2007-2013, “Alexandros Baltatzis” was a proposal of 1,436,192 Euros entitled “Forestry Practices of Fire Protection of the Peripheral Forest of Thessaloniki, Phase B”. This particular study suggests fire protection projects for 57 forestry surfaces, covering a total of 3,631.240 acres.
