Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation Celebrates 46th Anniversary

The first attempts of television broadcasting in Greece took place in 1960, when PPC operated the first experimental station within the framework of the International Expo of Thessaloniki and transmitted an experimental program in closed circuit TVs.
A more organized and systematic effort to create the first TV broadcasting station of the country emerged five years later by the EIR (National Radio Foundation), which began test television broadcasts by the end of 1965 from the radio stations of Zappion and the OTE building located on 3rd September Street.
In the afternoon of February 23, 1966, at 18:30 the EIR talker Eleni Kypraiou launched the first Greek TV show, introducing the new means of information to the people of Athens, who had been eagerly waiting for it before their (at the time) only 1,500 TV sets.
“Good evening ladies and gentlemen. From this day on, EIR establishes a series of experimental TV shows…”. For two hours the audience had the unprecedented chance to watch a brief news report, the show “For you, my lady”, a documentary and a short film. And thus, Greek TV became reality.
To date ERT (Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation) has been offering the Greek audience a full quality programme, while it has also tried to highlight the Greek culture in all its dimensions, to encourage domestic TV productions and introduce the latest know-how in the TV market.
ERT is now ready to proceed with launching new digital services that will improve the broadcasting quality of its programmes.
