Exhibition ‘Olympia: Myth – Cult – Games’ To Be Presented in Berlin

An exhibition titled ‘Olympia: Myth – Cult – Games’ is going to be presented in Berlin, running from the 31st of August, 2012 to the 7th of January, 2013.

The exhibition “Olympia: Myth – Cult – Games” was initiated by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, the official agency of the Greek Ministry of Culture abroad. Partners of the Cultural Foundation include the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, the Numismatic Museum of Athens, the Antiquities Collection of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the German Archaeological Institute, the Martin-Gropius-Bau of Berlin, and the Qatar Museums Authority.

The exhibition is composed of two sections:
Section 1: Ancient

The first section of the exhibition, which is devoted to the sanctuary of Olympia, the ancient Olympic Games (776 B.C. – 393 A.D.), and the history of the excavations will show over 600 ancient objects from the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, the National Archaeological Museum and the Numismatic Museum of Athens.

On the Greek side, the work of planning the exhibition and producing the catalogue has been done by Georgia E. Hatzi, head of the 7th Ephorate for Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, Dr. Nikolaos Kaltsas, Director of the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, and Despina Evgenidou, Director of the Numismatic Museum, Athens. On the German side, work was done by Prof. Wolf-Dieter Heilmeyer, formerly Director of the Berliner Antiquities Collection and Prof. Hans-Joachim Gehrke, formerly President of the German Archaeological Institute.

Section 2: Modern

The second part of the exhibition will be devoted to the history of the modern Olympic Games, starting in Athens in 1896. Objects from the collection of sports museum of Qatar, under the umbrella of Qatar Museums Authority, will be displayed, as well as loans from other international sports museums. Dr. Christian Wacker, director of the sports museum in Qatar (Qatar Museums Authority) will be leading research and curatorial work for this part of the exhibition. The exhibition will also visit Qatar in 2013 and prepare for the public opening of the sports museum in Qatar in the near future.

Both sections of the exhibition will be shown first in Berlin and then in Doha (Qatar) in spring 2013 and in Athens in autumn 2013.
