Demonstrations Throughout Greece Against More Austerity Measures

As the announcement was made of yet another “bailout” loan issued at the expense of a full-scale war against the people, reactions on the ground in Greece have been swift. A 48-hour General Strike has been called by mainstream unions for February 10-11.
The cuts in Greece during the last 2 years have reached more than 50% of the average salary income, while Greek banks are getting millions of euros and big corporations are paying ever less taxes. Debt, on the other hand, is getting ever bigger as the economy is being paralyzed.
After a full day of demonstrations in Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Chania, Kavala, Mytilini, Volos and Trikala on Friday, yet more demonstrations were planned for all the major cities for Saturday and Sunday.
In Athens, the workers and those sacked from Mental Health and Special Support participated in the 48-hour General Strike and decided to continue the occupation of the Ministry of Health until Sunday 12/2 at noon, when another assembly is going to be held in order to decide on the continuation of the demonstrations.
In Crete, students have occupied the Polytechnic, calling the people of the city to join them at the General Strike demonstration today. People have occupied the town hall of the city of Rethymno, too.
In the northern city of Veria, people have occupied the local “peripheral union” (a governance body).
The prefecture of the city of Larisa has been also occupied, and so has the prefecture in the city of Corfu.
