Unions Call 48-hour General Strike Against New Cuts

Greece’s public and private sector umbrella unions, ADEDY and GSEE, Thursday called a 48-hour general strike to protest new austerity measures demanded by the country’s international creditors in exchange for a fresh EUR130 billion bailout.
In a statement, the two unions called the strike for Friday and Saturday–a few days after a previous walkout–and said they would also stage three days of protest rallies around the country to decry the draconian terms of the new loan memorandum.
The statement comes just hours after Greece’s government–and the three political parties making up the governing coalition–held all-night talks with a visiting troika of European and International Monetary Fund officials over the new austerity measures.
The strike comes just days after a separate 24-hour strike called by the two unions on Tuesday.
