Reopening of Greek Minority School on Gokceada Island

The representative of the Minorities’ Foundations at the Turkish General Directorate of Foundations (VGM), Mr. Lakis Vingas, announced the reopening of a Greek minority school on the island of Gokceada (Imvros) after the Turkish authorities approved the relevant request.

In their official announcement, the Imvrian Association of Athens and the Imvrian Association of Macedonia-Thrace pointed out that the reopening of the Greek minority school on their homeland will give them the opportunity to return there with their families and children from Greece.

“Thus, our communities, recovering over the past 10 years, will be further supported with the presence of younger people” read the statement.

The Imvrian associations have welcomed the Turkish government’s decision, which is partly making up for the injustices of the past, and is an important step towards a better future for Gokceada and its people.
